SIBLINGS: CITIZENS WITH A CAUSE

A GROUP OF SIBLING ADVOCATES WITH A VISION FOR A MORE INCLUSIVE CANADA

On June 10th, 2021 a group of siblings presented this series of recommendations to Minister Todd Smith, his chief of staff and other provincial decision-makers from the Provincial Network.

The recommendations were prepared by siblings from across Ontario and align with Canada’s federal Youth Policy. They give direction to decision-makers in Ontario about what siblings need as advocates for their loved ones who have a disability. Specifically, the reccomedations speak to the types of supports and resources siblings need to ensure their well-being and to plan for the future with confidence.

 a Guidebook FOR Siblings

Siblings play an important role when it comes to advocating for their sibling who has a disability. We don’t have firsthand experience as someone who has a disability. However, we DO have a much deeper experience than say a friend, colleague or another ally would have. There is a lot of support and many resources available for parents, but it’s hard to find helpful information geared towards our experiences as siblings. This resource has been created by siblings within the Re:Action4Inclusion network.

This workbook focuses on the important role that siblings have in advocating for a more inclusive Canada. It is also a reflection tool to help guide you in thinking about your experiences as a sibling and in sharing those experiences with your family members.
